History museum ‘Steppin’ Out’ in style with third annual benefit fashion show |

Steppin Out in the upcoming Los Altos History Museum fashion show are Michelle Blaine, left, and Kim Monsalve, moms of students at Bullis Charter School. Irene Miszler, owner of Syd Boutique at Rancho Shopping Center, has outfitted them in the latest fall fashions.
The Los Altos History Museum has scheduled its third annual fashion show and luncheon, “Steppin’ Out,” noon to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 6 at Fremont Hills Country Club, 12889 Viscaino Place, Los Altos Hills.
The event benefits the Los Altos History Museum’s exhibits and educational programs.
Local clothiers – Ayurvastram, Cambric, Discovery Shop, Fina Boutique, Hartman Fashions, Los Altos Golf & Country Club Pro Shop, Répéter, Scarlet Boutique, Shunzi, Stuart’s Apparel, Syd Boutique and Yum Yum Tree – will showcase new and classic fall apparel.
BK Collections, Connoisseur of Los Altos and Gleim the Jeweler will present jewelry and other accessories. Bliss Beauty Center and other Los Altos merchants will provide raffle prizes.
Models are members of the community, many the moms of local schoolchildren.
“The fashion show committee and I are looking forward to hosting this year’s wonderful and fun event,” said chairwoman Patti Rose, secretary of the museum’s board of directors.

Kent Coats Kent has been designing hair for over 18 years with European and American based trainings
including Rusk, Paul Mitchell Systems, Redken and Vidal Sassoon. Originally from Michigan,
Kent joins Bliss from San Francisco. Kent specializes in hair color, cut, waves and texture,
and special occasions, including weddings! The most important thing for Kent is ease of
maintenance of hair he designed for the client! Kent continues his education to add to his
collection of creative styles that will best suit the individual clients and occasion!
Kent loves cooking, animals and spending time with family and friends!
Laurence Collins Laurence has been designing hair since 1976 with London based trainings including Jingles and
Vidal Sassoon. A founder of Laurence of London Salons and a winner of Los Altos Hair Stylist
of the Year, Laurence joins Bliss from Sarah Jones Hair Salon in Los Altos. Laurence specializes
in hair cut and color and the most important thing for Laurence is how the hair looks in 4-6 weeks!
Laurence continues his education to bring the latest trend to the local area. Laurence loves
playing and coaching Soccer and enjoys spending time with wife, Christina and two beautiful
children (at Springer School)!
Luis Nunez Luis has been designing hair for 18+ years with European and American based trainings including
Rusk, Paul Mitchell Systems, Redken and Vidal Sassoon. Luis joins Bliss from Sarah Jones Hair
Salon in Los Altos where he spent last 11 years. Luis specializes in hair color, cut, updo,
waves and texture, and special occasions, including weddings! The most important thing for
Luis is making clients hair look wonderful! Luis continues his education to bring the
interpreted styles from the runway to the local area. Luis loves yoga, working out, riding
his bike at Golden Gate Park and spending time with family and friends.
Ruben Sierras Ruben has been designing hair since 1980 with U.K. based education from Vidal Sassoon. He
was employed by Vidal Sassoon during the 1984 Olympics, when they were the official sponsor.
A former Creative Director, Ruben helped to build the educational program of Progressions
Salon into three successful locations within Northern California. His work has been featured
in international magazines such as Passion, Coiffure Q, International Hair, and most recently
Modern Salon trade publication. Ruben believes in designing hair that is contemporary and
requires little to no maintenance. He joins Bliss from Voila Hair Design in Los Altos and
specializes in hair design and dimensional color. Ruben is in the forefront of the latest
in education and introduces seasonal collections annually. His off time is spent with his
wife and daughters, and coaching girls varsity softball at Kings Academy.

The San Juan Sensation Junior Dance Team tapped into Sundays fashion show.
Sunday’s triple-digit heat provided a sizzling backdrop for Syd Boutique’s cool clothing at its first fashion show. Staged on the lawn in front of the store at Rancho Shopping Center in Los Altos, the show served as fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and showcased Syd’s women’s wear. The models, from teens to women in their 60s of all sizes and shapes, were Syd customers, said manager Durana Temor.“These were real women in real clothes,” she said.
Models sported outfits, shoes and accessories from Syd’s spring and summer collections, including sports, golf and resort wear as well as clothing for travel or special occasions.
Owner Irene Miszler, who also owns Bliss Beauty Center at Rancho, said her boutique carries sophisticated and chic fashions that don’t break the bank. “Our selections are made for the Los Altos lifestyle,” she said. “We are all about practical, easy and everyday fashion.”Miszler said a number of her customers are cancer survivors who come to Bliss or Syd for post-chemo makeovers. “It’s an emotionally taxing time for them,” she said, “and we can help them look their best.”
The fashion show featured a raffle, goodie bags, two performances from the San Juan Sensations Junior Dance Team of Los Altos, music from DJ Chris Webb and food and drinks. Customers received a 10 percent discount on clothing purchases for the rest of the day, and the store donated 10 percent of all sales to the American Cancer Society. “I hope it becomes an annual event,” Miszler said. Syd's Annual Fashion Show May 17, 2009 - A Success!
Syd Boutique, located in Los Altos Rancho Shopping Center, held its first Annual Fashion Show on
Sunday to benefit the American Cancer Society. 14 local residents/models featuring Syd's Spring/Summer
collection walked the runway cheered by an enthusiastic audience. Venue special included dance
performances by the San Juan Sensations Junior Dance Team of Los Altos. Bliss Beauty Center
provided model's hair and makeup service along with many raffle prizes. Despite the record heat,
the first Annual Fashion Show was a huge success. Music was provided by DJ Chris, and fine
food and drinks were servered. Guests also enjoyed 10% discount on the latest collection of fashion for the season
and 10% of the day's proceeds were donated to American Cancer Society.

A colorful cross section of local performers turned out Saturday to audition for the first Los Altos Live! talent show, scheduled next month. Three judges watched 32 performances from which they chose 22 to appear at the talent show. The event is scheduled 7:30 p.m. March 7 at the 370-seat Los Altos High School Eagle Theater, 201 Almond Ave.
“We were amazed at the variety of talent that showed up,” said Abby Althoff, director of the show. “The public is in for a real treat when the performance is staged.”
Althoff has produced and directed more than 100 shows in the Los Altos area in the past 15 years.
In addition to Althoff, the judging team included Nancy Glaze, longtime community leader with such groups as Los Altos High School’s Broken Box Theatre Company, and Linda Thompson, president of Peninsula Youth Theatre.
Christy Dawson, assistant principal of Los Altos High, will serve as master of ceremonies. Among the featured performers for the evening is Stephen Waarts, a 12-year-old violin virtuoso who performed recently at Carnegie Hall.
According to Mike Abrams, chairman of the event, “The participants, who range in age from 6 to 81, seem extremely enthusiastic about the opportunity to be on stage in their hometown.”
The program, co-sponsored by the Los Altos Cultural Association and the Los Altos Town Crier, is not intended to be competitive “but to showcase the variety of talent we have in our community,” Abrams said.
Proceeds from the show will benefit high school student programs.

The Los Altos History Museum has scheduled its second annual Sparkle and Shine Fall Fashion Show and luncheon noon Nov. 14 at the University Club, 3277 Miranda Ave, Palo Alto.
The show benefits the Los Altos History Museum’s educational and exhibition programs.
Eight local clothiers – 151 Boutique, Anniki, Cambric, Hartman Fashions, Oz Boutique, Stuart’s Apparel, Unika and Yum Yum Tree – will showcase casual and evening wear. Modeled by community members and mothers of local schoolchildren, the outfits will be appropriate for a variety of ages.
“We are pleased to showcase fashions from our local dress stores to help promote their businesses while also raising funds for our museum – a perfect win-win event,” said Lois Adams, chairwoman of the show and vice president of the museum’s board.
The show is underwritten by Bliss Beauty Center and Pamela and Edward Taft.
